Frequently Asked Questions
Q: When do I pick up my milk?
A: You will have a set day of the week to come to the farm and get your milk.
Q: How often is the tank cleaned?
A: We clean the bulk tank on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 4:30 pm, just before the evening milking. Come before then or after 6:30pm to get your milk from the tank. If you come and the tank is empty, get your milk from the cans in the refrigerator (inside barn).Q: Is the milk tested?
A: Our farm is inspected by the State of Michigan regularly. We also send a sample of milk at the first of the month to check for E. coli 0157:H7, Listeria, Salmonella, and Campylobacter. We have never had a positive test. Cows are also tested weekly for mastitis and treated with herbs, homeopathy, tinctures, prayer and vitamins if she tests positive.Q: Do I bring my own jars or do you supply them?
A: We have half gallon glass jars for $3 each. You can purchase those or you may do your own thing. You are responsible to thoroughly clean them before you come to the farm to get your milk. Keeping the milk cold is also VERY important, so many people bring coolers to contain the milk jars and keep the milk cold.Q: What kinds of cows are in the herd?
A: The program started with all Jerseys and now we have brought in Holstein/Jersey crossbreeds to add volume. When a cow needs to be added to Green Pastures, we buy one from Steve N Sons because we already know the different qualities of that cow.Q: Do I have to drive out to the farm every week?
A: Many families who live close enough or enjoy the drive come weekly. Others form pick-up groups and take turns coming to the farm.
