The Spring Flush!

Grassfields, LLC and Green Pastures are seasonal dairies. With annual breeding in the summer months, calving season comes in the spring months. The first calves are usually born at the end of March, with the busiest of months being April. We will usually have about 4-5 calves born each day. Some days, even 8 or 9 calves! The cows keep us on our toes.

With seasonal calving comes lots of fresh milk in the spring and summer. One share of milk can yield up to 4 gallons of milk per week. Then over the 10 months that we are milking the cows, the milk volume will gradually decrease. Last year we stayed at 3.5 gallons/week until late summer. That is when many families will start freezing extra milk that will get them through the dry period of February and March.

On Saturday, April 26th, we will be having an open house. We will start around 9:45 am, at the Meerman chapel that is on the north side of the farm, next to the blue house. Bill and Shelly Van Leire will be playing music that they have written. Their style is celtic/folk and the focus of their lyrics is on healthy eating and living. We will be doing a farm tour so that your can see how we raise our animals. Come meet your cows!
